CISGEM was founded in 1966 by the Ministry of Industry as a Public Institute for the Control and Certification of Gemological and Precious Materials at the Milan Chamber of Commerce, and for more than 50 years, it has been a point of reference for the goldsmith sector.

The company Pronto Gold S.p.A., which currently owns it, entrusts its management to the FGI - Fondazione Gemmologica Italiana. A non-profit organization recognized by the Lombardy Region whose objectives are analysis services recognized throughout the world, applied research, technical-scientific consultancy, training and standardisation. In 2015, it entered into an agreement with the University of Milan for the definition of guidelines for gemological analyses.

The CISGEM laboratory has actively participated in CIBJO (World Jewelery Confederation); he is one of the seven global members of the international group LMHC (Laboratory Manual Harmonization Committee) in charge of drafting the rules for the correct nomenclature in commercial transactions and certifications; and is part of the IGC (International Gemmological Conference), a prestigious association that brings together the most important personalities in gemology.
